Derby's Street Lighting PFI Contract

Merrill Way, Allenton

The equipment being removed consisted of the following items in 1997. These records were massively out of date by 2011, as columns 129863 to 129882 were not listed - the numbers do not even appear on the 1997 inventory list. Incredibly, there may, therefore, have been a large gap in the lighting along this road until the late 1990s, when the nineteen 'infill' columns were installed - I cannot remember how this road looked back then, so cannot be sure.

The following photographs were taken on Saturday, 29th January 2010.

Philips MA 50 135 Watt SOX lanterns (attached to 10 m tubular steel columns) can be seen in the background of the following photograph. The three outgoing columns in the foreground were 8 m in height, made by CU Phosco, and supported Thorn Alpha 4 90 Watt SOX lanterns. The 8 m columns are those that do not appear in the above inventory record for this road. The large tubular object located roughly in the centre of the picture is a telecommunications mast.

Zooming out into a wide shot, more Alpha 4s can be seen.

The second column on the left supported an integrally-geared Philips MA 90. This was probably a one-off replacement for a failed Alpha 4.

The CU brackets are recognisable by their lack of webbing between the outreach and the column spigot.

Another telecommunications mast was installed a little further up the road:

Not all of the new columns were installed alongside their outgoing counterparts - in the case of the column seen below, this may have been due to the presence of a nearby tree.

Older 8 m columns (supporting GEC Z9464 90 Watt SOX lanterns) followed. I understand that these columns were installed in about 1970/1, and originally supported Atlas Alpha 3 MBF lanterns.

The new lanterns run SON-T lamps; probably 150 Watt each.

Overhead electricity transmission lines crossed the open land behind the next column. The lines were far enough away to not pose any proximity issues to either the outgoing or new column.
