Derby's Street Lighting PFI Contract
Pastures Hill / Rykneld Road, Littleover
The majority of outgoing installations on this road were sleeved 10 m Stanton concrete columns (that would originally have been 8 m prior to sleeving) supporting integrally-geared Thorn Alpha Four 135 Watt SOX lanterns. By the time that these pictures were taken (Sunday, 4th July 2010), the outgoing columns were no longer in use: in many cases, the lanterns had been removed. The replacement 10 m tubular steel columns are fitted with the large (SGS 254) version of the Philips Iridium lantern; with SON-T lamps of either 150 Watt/250 Watt being fitted. All photographs show columns installed on Rykneld Road - a video for the Pastures Hill lights can be downloaded further down this page.
Notice the two-part design to the sleeve:
One of the Alpha Fours lost its gear tray cover prior to the commencement of the relighting scheme. This possibly caused the lantern's grub screws to seize; hence why it was not removed along with the other Alpha 4s. Instead, the lantern's bowl, lamp and cell had instead been removed; leaving just the gear remaining in the empty shell of the lantern.
Some of the new columns were installed opposite their outgoing equivalents:
The base of the column pictured above had had its inspection door removed, revealing the disconnected supply cut-out. The imprint of a previous lantern's ballast can just about be seen on the backboard, above the cut-out.
Balfour Beatty safety barriers offered some protection to pedestrians traversing the excavated footpath around the bases of the next old/new columns:
The straight cable joint connecting the new column to the underground low voltage supply was visible within the excavation. The disconnected lead-sheathed service cable can just be seen entering the cable entry hole of the outgoing column.
The next new column was installed a distance away from its outgoing counterpart; this was (presumably) done in order to keep it away from nearby trees.
Again, the cable joint was visible within the hole immediately in front of the column. Despite these pictures being taken during the 2010 Wimbledon tennis tournament, I think the presence of a tennis ball within the hole was purely coincidental!
