Local Thorn Rivieras 1 and 2
The Riviera is not widely used in this area - I know of only a few examples of both types. The lantern appeared locally in the early 2000s - probably about the time when Thorn unveiled it. The smaller Riviera 1 is used on a footpath running alongside the A52 in Spondon (from where my own example was removed), whereas the larger Riviera 2 is used in the City Centre as a replacement lantern.
This is one of the Riviera 1 lanterns installed on the Spondon footpath.
Although the front section of the canopy would have originally been dark grey, this has now faded to match the colour of the rear part of the canopy.
This dayburning Riviera 2 in Derby's Cornmarket would have replaced an Alpha 3, which would itself have replaced an Atlas Alpha 8. Following the relighting of Derby City Centre as part of the Street Lighting PFI, this installation no longer exists; however, it does reveal how the above lantern would have looked when new.
