109ED. Gasworks Street, Hillhouse, Huddersfield, Kirklees, West Yorkshire With thanks to Dwight for informing me of this Survivor. Situated at the entrance to the former eponymous gasworks is an early 1950s' Concrete Utilities' 25 ft (8 m) Avenue 3DNN column with a side-entry Arc 2 bracket and (suspected) ELECO Goldenray Mk III (or Crompton Corona II) for 140 Watt SO/H and SOI/H, and later, 100 Watt / 90 Watt SOX (low pressure sodium) lamps. Considering that the gasworks site closed in 1972 (although a small portion remains in use with National Gas), this installation has probably lain disused for longer than it was in operation - double the amount of time, in fact. At least one further example was still extant in April 2004, on the opposite side of the road, according to the image seen further down this page, but this had been removed by 2024.
Two large pipes pass behind the column before burrowing under the ground; presumably, to the large gas holder on the opposite side of the road, which was decommissioned in 2006, and in the throes of disassembly in November 2024.
The familiar open portion above where the bracket attaches to the column (to enable it to be secured in place) is visible.
The lantern is intact and undamaged, despite its apparent disuse, and even retains a lamp, though the adhesive applied to the sides of the Perspex bowl to attach refractor panels has failed, leading to the panels sliding into the bottom of the bowl.
As the underside of the bowl is relatively clean, the refractors can be seen in their revised position.
The column is wedged into a narrow gap between the perimeter wall and railings. Owing to the base being triangular, the access door is partially obscured by the wall that forms the rear of the access road into the site.
The bracket is beginning to spall at its upper end.
Railway tracks set into the carriageway remain visible on the opposite side of the road - these can be seen in use in this 1960s' video, and whilst this particular column cannot be seen clearly, other similar examples are present.
