109EE. Mountjoy Road, Greenhead, Highfields, Huddersfield, Kirklees, West Yorkshire With thanks to Dwight for informing me of this Survivor. Situated near to the junction of Trinity Street is a 15 ft (5 m) Concrete Utilities' 'Estate Minor X' column with a top-entry swan neck bracket and Thorn Beta 5 35 Watt SOX (low pressure sodium), which was still (apparently) in nightly service when photographed in November 2024. No other examples survived along the rest of Mountjoy Road by then, though Google Street View proves that there were more in the past, though curiously, most of the swan necked columns then were the equivalent 10 series type from Stanton.
The installation is in good condition, with no visible signs of spalling or structural cracking.
Although Concrete Utilities continued production of the Estate Minor X into the 1980s, which could then mean that the Beta 5 is this column's original lantern, the use of the Stanton 10 columns too suggests that the columns are older, with the Beta 5s replacing earlier lanterns.
The triangular-based column fits neatly between the two driveways.
Two rather spindly ladder bars emerge from the column; these could be an in-house addition, although Street View shows that only the CU columns had them, suggesting that they were supplied by the manufacturer.
I thought that the Beta 5 looked 'different' somehow; this close-up reveals the reason - the original bowl has been lost, and a vacuum-formed facsimile has replaced it.
Judging by how rusty the internal reflector plate / gear tray is, the bowl was probably missing for some time prior to the fitting with the replacement.
The column door is the more unusual pressed steel sheet design, rather than the ubiquitous aluminium type.
