109FC. Hungate, Brompton-by-Sawdon, North Yorkshire With thanks to Dwight for informing me of these Survivors. Situated on this short road are two installations that use lanterns from the GEC Z5590 series; specifically, the Z5591NP for 80 - 125 Watt MBF (mercury vapour) lamps that use a three-pin bayonet cap. One of these is attached to a 5 m tubular steel column via a swan neck bracket; the other is attached to a wall bracket.
The column-mounted example is located near to the junction with Malpas Road.
The swan neck brackets are functional in appearance, and feature quite a wide radius curve.
On this installation, the swan neck forms part of the column, rather than being a separate detachable section.
The Z5591's polycarbonate bowl has discoloured from the UV light emitted by both the lamp and sunlight generally.
A GEC Z1640P ballast for 80 Watt lamps, and made in May 1983, is installed in the column base, along with a capacitor to the right (obscured by the wiring), and Royce Thompson P42 two-part photocell relay. The detector fitted to the lantern is the later 0.5 Watt type, and must be a replacement.
The wall-mounted example is installed approximately halfway along the road.
Although this bowl appears to have even worse discolouration than the first example did, some of this is the result of dirt having accumulated on the inside.
The fuse / control gear box is made by AC Ford, and in all likelihood, the bracket itself probably is too.
