111A. Mariner, Tamworth, Staffordshire Although a variety of columns and lanterns exist around the estate, perhaps, the most notable are several Stanton 1808 8 m concrete columns supporting Thorn Alpha 5 lanterns. Although the Alpha 5 was designed to run 140 - 200 Watt linear sodium (SLI/H) lamps, and some of these versions were converted in-house to run 135 Watt SOX lamps instead, later versions produced by Thorn were equipped to run SOX lamps immediately, as the popularity of SLI/H waned. Indeed, the Alpha 5 was removed from product catalogues after 1978, with a new Alpha 4 lantern, designed for running SOX lamps, replacing it.

This first example is to be found near the junction of Apollo.

This example features a deep polycarbonate bowl.

The bowl tapers inwards slightly towards its front.

This example is to be found near Landsberg.

This too has a deep bowl, although this one appears to be acrylic.

Aside from being a little grubby internally, the bowl is undamaged.

A little further down the road was this similar example.

Water ingress seems to be an issue with these lanterns, with both this, and the previous Alpha 5 showing signs of it in the bowls.

The next column along also supported an Alpha 5.

Here, a noticeably shallower bowl was employed.
