111B. Buckingham Road (and surrounding streets), Tamworth, Staffordshire Still extant on this estate's streets in 2023 are a number of the original lighting columns still running their original lanterns - in many cases, on Buckingham Road and Chartwell, this combination comes in the form of a Stanton 1808 8 m concrete column and ELECO GR 100 90 Watt SOX lantern. On side roads, Simplex Aries lanterns running 35 Watt SOX are fitted to Stanton 10 F 15 ft (5 m) columns, while Solumbra post-top lanterns, also made by Simplex, and also running 35 Watt lamps, and again fitted to Stanton 10 columns, light the footpaths between cul-de-sacs.

Several consecutive 'as-original' installations existed on this section of Buckingham Road; a convenient nearby BT chamber carried 1978 as its date of manufacture, which gives an approximate age to the lighting too.

The design for both the 8 m columns and the lanterns dates back to the 1960s, however.

This is the view of Chartwell, near its junction with Buckingham Road.

The first noticeable change that ELECO made to the design was to include provision for a NEMA photocell socket on the canopy. Later, the aluminium canopy was replaced with GRP, and finally, the angular bowl was replaced with a more curved equivalent (the aluminium bowl support ring also going), once Davis had taken over production of some of the former ELECO range.

Littlecote is one of the residential roads that is still lit with Aries lanterns.

Although this version of the Aries was designed for 55 Watt lamps, all on this estate are fitted with shorter 35 Watt (or 26 Watt SOX-E) lamps instead, even though a dedicated 35 Watt lantern was produced. Perhaps, the initial plan had been to use the larger lamps, but as this would be slightly overboard for residential cul-de-sacs, lower wattage lamps were substituted on later re-lamps.

The size difference between wattages is evident, thanks to the large amount of empty space in front of the lamp.

Littlecote is also one of the cul-de-sacs that has footpath access to another road, and so a Solumbra is seen on here.

The Solumbra began life as a Revo product, but was absorbed into the later Relite, and eventual Simplex, product lines.

The footpath leads on to the Browsholme cul-de-sac, where another Solumbra-topped Stanton 10 was to be seen. Although this part of the road is not a footpath, the carriageway does narrow to the width of a single vehicle for a short section.
