112L. Hitchin Road, Arlesey, Bedfordshire Two notable installations exist within only a short distance of each other on this road. The first is a 15 ft (5 m) tubular steel Stewart & Lloyd column, which supports a GEC ZD10606 post-top lantern, designed for running a 250 - 400 Watt MBF (mercury vapour), a 310 - 400 Watt SON (high pressure sodium), or a 90 Watt SOX (low pressure sodium) lamp - all of which are rather excessive for such a low mounting height. The second is a 10 ft (3 m) Revo 'Moseley' cast iron column with swan neck bracket and ELECO GR-553 lantern, designed for running a 35 - 55 Watt SOX lamp, and still running the former in July 2024.
The ZD10606's column is located near Albone Avenue.
The lantern features a relatively shallow translucent Perspex bowl.
The aluminium base casting is rather corroded, causing the brown paint applied to flake quite heavily.
The cast iron column is near Howberry Green, and looks somewhat incongruous with its neighbouring columns being modern, and much taller.
Owing to the swan neck having a narrow radius, a spacer has had to be installed beneath the finial and the lantern, due to the latter's length fouling the bracket pipe if installed directly.
THe column's decorative base section looks rather unloved, with its paint peeling and banded-on inspection door.
Even with the spacer added, space is tight, particularly because of the ornate ring placed on the bracket curve.
