118C. Off Great Brook Meadow Close, Houlton, Clifton-upon-Dunsmore, Rugby, Warwickshire With thanks to AgentHalogen_87 for informing me of these Survivors. Located in numerous fields surrounding the former Rugby Radio Station are wooden telegraph poles supporting twin brackets and Thorn Alpha 5 lanterns, for 140 - 200 Watt SLI/H (linear low pressure sodium) lamps. I am not certain of the purpose of these installations, particularly with them lighting nothing but the open fields, but they have, clearly, not been operational for a long time. I remember seeing examples when travelling on the nearby M1 Motorway in the late 2000s, prior to (or just after) the closure of the Radio Station, but all of these were lost once demolition of the transmission masts was completed. Therefore, I was surprised to discover that some examples survived into 2025, but even they could be on borrowed time, given that much of the former Radio Station site is undergoing redevelopment into a large housing estate, with the former (listed) power and transmission buildings having been converted into a school.

Two of the installations are seen from the footpath that passes behind Great Brook Meadow Close.

The foreground pole is leaning backwards slightly.

A SLI/H lamp is still visible within the right-hand Alpha 5, although it looks to be broken at the front end of the lantern.

The bowls on the background lanterns have become slightly cloudy through age. The SLI/H lamps in these still appear to be intact.

The control gear for each lantern is installed in a steel box attached to the pole, with the supply cable/s being clipped up the pole. These boxes are now in poor condition, and are beginning to fall apart, exposing the sizeable ballasts and capacitors within both. The ballast in the upper box is installed upside-down, with the wiring terminals facing upwards.

The two Alpha 5s on the other side of the footpath are in far worse condition - both have lost their lamps and bowls, and the right-hand example's canopy has rotated on its bracket.

Such is the extent of the vandalism that even the lampholders are missing from the left-hand example.

Two further bowlless examples are seen from the vantage point of an unfinished footpath leading away from Fessenden Road.

These two examples are seen from the, appropriately, A5 road, to the east of the site.

Here, the left-hand bracket has gone completely, while the right-hand lantern's canopy is facing upside-down.

Two further examples with wonky canopies are seen in the far distance. The cover of the upper gear box is missing, while the equivalent cover on the lower box appears to be loose.
