12KAB. Off Approach Road, Bethnal Green, London Borough of Tower Hamlets Thanks to Alex Monk for informing me of these Survivors. Installed on the roadway adjacent the Reynolds Court flats are two CU Phosco P178 post-top lanterns fitted to 5 m British Steel tubular steel columns. Although the flats date back to 1951, and commemorate the Festival of Britain that was held that year, these lighting installations will be considerably newer than the building (probably, the 1980s).
Unusually, these P178s feature semi-transparent bowls; normally, the bowls are made to be translucent, in order to provide general area lighting.
From this angle, the internal dirt on the bowl reduces its transparent appearance.
The other example is on the side of the building that faces Bishops Way.
What looked to be fingerprints were visible on this lantern - perhaps, suggesting that it had received recent maintenance at the time of picturing.
