12KBA. Magdalen Passage, off Prescot Street, Whitechapel, London Borough of Tower Hamlets With thanks to Lucas Allen for discovering this Survivor. Installed approximately halfway along this footpath is a disused wall bracket, and its associated fuse / control gear enclosures, supporting an ELECO "Goldenray Mark X" HW-932 lantern, for 60 Watt SO/H and SOI/H (and later, 35 Watt SOX - low pressure sodium) lamps. This installation seems to have become redundant when standalone lighting columns were installed in the alleyway. If access to the old lantern was the issue in why it ended up becoming superseded, adding the columns has done little to resolve the situation, as these are not hinged, and thus, would still require operatives to use ladders or specialist platforms designed for such narrow areas when maintenance was required.

The old bracket is attached to a rather imposing red brick building.

The HW-932 has its origins in the late 1950s, and was marketed as being a slim-line version of the similar HW-747.

The slimming down was achieved by making the lantern only suitable for accommodating the lamp control gear remotely - in this case, it will be housed in the chunky cast iron enclosure attached to the bracket pipe.

A cast iron AEI (Associated Electrical Industries) fuse box (with its cover installed upside-down) is situated a little to the right of the main lighting unit. The cut length of concentric cable emerging from below the box confirms that the electricity supply is dead.

The building opposite provides its own walkway lighting along the alleyway; previously, these comprised Thorn Precinct bulkheads, but by the time that these pictures were taken, thin LED bulkheads were fitted instead.

The top-entry bracket is a simple curved steel conduit affair, without any embellishments, as an older bracket would (almost certainly) have featured.

A 35 Watt SOX lamp is still visible within the lantern. The bowl ring retaining clip has worked loose, but is still supporting the ring adequately to prevent it from swinging open.
