12KC. Tarling Street, Shadwell, London Borough of Tower Hamlets With thanks to "TheLightingEnthusiast" for informing me of these Survivors. Situated near the junction of Deancross Street is a 15 ft (5 m) Concrete Utilities' 'Byway' column with top-entry bracket and GEC Z5590-based lantern. The exact part code for this lantern is likely to be Z5599/SB, however, owing to it using the 'Oxford'-type optical system comprising a Z6605 shallow glass refractor bowl, and originally, a Z6502 symmetrical refractor dome (this may have been lost through time). The use of fluorescent-coated 80 - 125 Watt mercury vapour (MBF) lamps instead of un-coated lamps (MB/U) makes this the Z5599, rather than Z5591. Although the lantern was seen on Google Street View to be operating in daylight in 2008, the understanding is that it had stopped working altogether by 2023.
The column stands alongside a 1980s' tubular steel signpost supporting period twin Forest City lighting units.
The style of bowl clip, and recessed bowl support ring, identify the lantern canopy as being from the Z5590 range, instead of the sister Z5580 range.
The lantern is aligned almost correctly on the bracket, in respect of the refractors that are moulded into the bowl.
The Concrete Utilities' 'CU' logo is included above the door, along with the British Standard 'Kitemark' symbol. 'Concrete Utilities Ltd' itself is moulded into the concrete below the door.
The two signlights each take two 8 Watt fluorescent lamps.
'Forest City Manchester' is cast into the lower part of the fittings.
As a bonus, on Deancross Street itself, is this 5 m tubular steel column supporting a P178 (another CU product) lantern.
The bowl on this example is slightly more transparent compared to those seen with most other examples of this lantern.
