12S. Melcombe Place, City of Westminster, London Located outside Marylebone Railway Station, within the taxi rank, are two 25 ft (8 m) Abacus base-hinged tubular steel columns, both supporting GEC Z8520 lanterns - the cut-off / flat glass version of the Z8526. The use of the Abacus columns (when vehicular access is not an issue here) and a cut-off lanterns away from railway lines suggests that these installations belonged to the station, and were probably assembled using standard British Rail stock parts. Two further columns of the same type are installed directly opposite these, but are fitted with Philips 'Iridium' SGS 253s instead, which may indicate that they are owned and maintained by City of Westminster Council in the modern era.
One of the two installations is seen below; both are identical in appearance.
The column, bracket and lantern are all (rather freshly, it appears) painted black, although the original bare aluminium is visible on the top of the lantern canopy - either, because it was never painted at all (as no-one would see the top of the lantern from the ground), or because the paint has flaked as the lantern has become warm during operation.
The lamp is difficult to see within the lantern, owing to the glass cover requiring cleaning.
The glass cover is missing from the second lantern, and a hideous LED 'corn' lamp has replaced the original discharge lamp.
