131B. The Village / Northfields, Strensall, York With thanks to Dwight for informing me of these Survivors. Installed in this small North Yorkshire village are several 15 ft (5 m) concrete lighting columns made by Stanton, which still retained 35 Watt SOX (low pressure sodium) lanterns in June 2024.
This 1950s' Stanton 7 type with later Thorn Beta 5 lantern on The Village is installed within a private garden. It is probably because of the column's position that it has survived - removing it without causing damage to the garden area would be tricky, and transferring the electricity service to a replacement column installed outside of the garden would also not be straightforward.
Unusually for a Beta 5, a polycarbonate bowl is employed, rather than the more common acrylic type.
This 1805-type column with F-type top-entry bracket is around the corner, on Northfields.
The lamp in this GEC Z9581 / Siemens SRL 35 looks rather worn.
Another couple of 1805 columns, this time, with longer brackets and side-entry lantern attachments, were situated in a private car park for a healthcare organisation. These installations are likely to date from the late 1980s; one is pictured below.
As this version of the lantern is side-entry, the photocell is positioned at a more central location on the lantern canopy.
