168AC. Sparrow Hill, Loughborough, Charnwood, Leicestershire With thanks to Leo Conway for discovering these Survivors. Attached to the 'Caravelli' Italian restaurant (the former Old Manor Hotel), located opposite Church Gate, are two GEC Z8455 post-top lanterns. While the Z8455 was designed to run two or four 2 ft (600 mm) 40 Watt T12 linear fluorescent lamps, these examples have been converted to run two standard bayonet-capped lamps instead, and may have been installed here second-hand.
The lanterns are positioned either side of a window that is positioned centrally within a gable end section of the building.
Owing to the length (and weight) of these lanterns, the wall brackets secure them at both the top and bottom.
The original frosted glass (and Perspex, in the case of the door section) panelling has been replaced with transparent pieces instead.
Both lanterns retain their central vertical spines. In the case of the left-hand lantern, the access door is hanging open, and faces towards the wall.
Given that the top finial and 'tent' section are intended to detach to allow access to the internal wiring, the wall bracket's top support struts may now prevent this action from being completed.
The lower glazing panels are missing completely, and both lanterns only run one lamp each. An unused bayonet lampholder is visible on the right-hand side of the upper support section, and could be original, if bayonet-capped fluorescent lamps were produced in the 2 ft variant, rather than the more standard bi-pin type.
Whereas the right-hand holder is disused on the left-hand lantern, the opposite is true for the right-hand lantern.
Nearby, the footpath leading through the grounds of All Saints' with Holy Trinity Church is lit with faux Victorian cast iron columns with swan neck brackets and top-entry lanterns; however, one disused lighting column is genuine. This comprises an iron structure attached to a stone plinth.
The year 1864 is carved into the base section.
Although no longer fitted with a lantern, the lower frame remains in place.
The modern lanterns are now fitted with repulsive LED 'Corn' lamps, which will be very glary when in operation.
