Quorn & Woodhouse Station, Forest Road, Quorndon, Woodthorpe, Charnwood, Leicestershire Situated around this station that forms part of the preserved Great Central Railway heritage route are several noteworthy lighting installations.
The platforms are lit with SUGG Rochester lanterns that are post-top mounted to some rather decorative cast iron columns. The station has the notable fact that it retained gas lighting until its closure in the 1960s; only since preservation has an electricity supply been installed (though many of the lights have been retained as gaslit).
The columns themselves are also SUGG products.
Each of the stations is preserved in the style of a different era - in the case of Quorn & Woodhouse, a 1940s' theme is employed. Although the Coughtrie PW.15 seen here is possibly later than this, it still suits the period; particularly, with it being attached to this ornate wall bracket.
The bracket's decorative scrollwork appears to have been re-shaped by hand. A modern filament-style LED lamp is now used in the fitting.
Although the bowl is missing from this example, its retention ring would have been supported by the three bolts that pass through the canopy.
This little cast iron column, complete with swan neck bracket and reflector lantern, was to be seen at the southern end of the island platform.
The lantern is secured to the bracket using twists of wire and chains - I assume that it must have been found to sway about during blustery weather (or from trains doing their almighty 25 mph along the rails!), and this alteration proved to be a successful means of reducing this effect.
A Cohen tubular steel column is installed opposite; this supports an ornate twin bracket, with each arm also accommodating a reflector fitting. The two vintage signs seen beneath the bracket, order against trespassing on the railway, and warn that trains could approach from either direction.
The brackets are strapped to the column shaft, rather than popping over it.
Peculiarly, much newer linear halogen fittings are installed within the bodies of the reflector shades.
