170D. Off Nottingham Road, Nether Broughton, Melton, Leicestershire Installed alongside a vehicle repair garage is a 25 ft (8 m) tubular steel column supporting an Atlas Alpha 3 lantern, designed for 250 - 400 Watt mercury vapour (MBF) lamps. The lantern faces away from the garage, however, and instead, is positioned in such a way that it would have provided illumination for the adjacent property. This used to be the car park for the former Red House public house, but following conversion to a private dwelling, the land is now occupied by new housing. A second, identical column existed in the car park, but was removed as part of the redevelopment. This column, however, being on the other side of a large, well-established, conifer hedge, has remained extant, owing to the difficulties in gaining access to remove it.

The column has a noticeable lean to its shaft, although this does not appear to be a recent occurrence.

The growth of moss on the Alpha 3's aluminium canopy suggests that the lantern is no longer in use, and probably hasn't been for many years - the heat generated from overnight running of the lamp would ensure that the canopy remained clean, and growth-free.

Although the inside of the bowl is also grubby, the secondary concertina-type reflector above the lamp is just about visible.

Naturally, I took the opportunity to photograph the friendly neighbourhood wood pigeon too!

The lantern's identity is cast into its rear portion.

As with my own Atlas Alpha 3 of this type, a painted white diffusion spot is applied to the underside of the bowl, though this is difficult to see, owing to the gathered dirt. A small hole is visible on the other side of the bowl.
