170I. Gladstone Street, Ibstock, Leicestershire Attached to the former Boot Public House by means of a corner bracket is a Thorn Beta 4 / AEI Kirby lantern, designed for running a single 60 - 200 Watt GLS (tungsten filament) lamp, or a 80 - 125 Watt MBF (mercury vapour) lamp - an unusual choice for a domestic outdoor light, when products such as those made by Coughtrie dominated this market. With the pub having closed in November 2021, the lantern is unlikely to see any use at all these days, but thankfully, remains fully intact, despite the closure.
The lantern overlooks the pub's former car park, being installed at the back of the building.
The paintwork to the bracket and lantern canopy still looks relatively fresh.
The lantern features a prismatic 'Oroglass' (acrylic) refractor bowl - unlike polycarbonate, this does not discolour when exposed to UV light, which is probably how this example has avoided discolouration, even from sunlight, if a GLS lamp is used, rather than an MBF, which would create additional UV.
The adjacent fire escape ladder proved a useful vantage point for taking a picture of the lantern at closer proximity.
The refractors provide an asymmetrical light distribution.
