173N. Roadchef Strensham M5 Southbound Services, Worcestershire Located on the slip road leading off the M5 Motorway and into the service area is a 35 ft (10 m) Stewart & Lloyd tubular steel column supporting a Mk 1 Atlas Alpha 3 lantern, designed for running a 250 - 400 Watt MBF (mercury vapour) lamp. The lantern is likely to date from 1962, when the service area, and the M5 itself, opened. The installation has probably survived numerous redevelopments of the service area thanks to its being outside of the work area each time, whilst also being close enough not to be considered part of the motorway's overall street lighting.

The installation is seen, against a rather threatening sky backdrop, in June 2024.

A slightly cranked outreach bracket links the lantern to the column.

The locking catch on this side of the lantern is insecure, although as it is still attached to the rear section, the front section is still likely to be sealed sufficiently to prevent water ingress.

The Perspex bowl has become translucent with age.
