194AF. Shrigley Road, Pott Shrigley, Cheshire Installed on a wall at the junction of Bakestonedale Road is a plinth-mounted post-top gas lantern. When photographed in September 2024, the lantern was operating in daylight, proving that it remained in operational condition. Although positioned at a junction, the amount of light produced by this lantern would be woefully inadequate to highlight the presence of the junction to any approaching vehicles, although the lack of any other surrounding lighting would assist in enhancing the output. The light is, therefore, probably intended as more of a decorative feature in the village than any sort of intentional street light.
The gas pipe supplying the lantern is seen emerging from the ground and heading up the wall.
Two mantles are provided within the lantern, and a v-shaped mirrored panel at the rear of the lantern serves as a reflector.
A battery-powered controller should provide the automatic switching. Assuming that the batteries are, simply, worn out, replacing them and resetting the controller ought to resolve the fault.
