194AH. Flash Lane, Bollington Cross, Bollington, Cheshire With thanks to Dwight for informing me of this Survivor. Located a short distance away from the Cock & Pheasant Public House is a redundant 15 ft (5 m) 'Avenue 2D' column with 'Arc 2' top-entry bracket, made by Concrete Utilities, and supporting a Revo A42.558 'Lucidor' lantern, for 45 - 60 Watt SO/H and SOI/H lamps, and 35 Watt SOX (low pressure sodium) lamps. A replacement 6 m tubular steel column with LED lantern is installed alongside, and has been since (at least June 2021), but the old column was still awaiting removal in September 2024. Rather hilariously, the new column is damaged, with its shaft leaning forwards towards the road, meaning that the column that it was meant to replace could end up lasting longer than it does!
The rather hunched-up new column is doing a rather smart impression of the elderly people depicted on the sign that is attached to the old column!
The LED lantern looks to be an example from the Philips 'Digistreet' range.
Whilst the new lantern is a sleek, streamlined design, the Lucidor...isn't! This is the version with the lamp control gear positioned within the lantern itself. It looks bulky and cumbersome - just how a proper lantern should look! A Royce Thompson P42 two-part photocell detector emerges from the front of the canopy to switch the lantern off and on, as necessary.
Something has crumpled the new column's structure beneath the door, causing the lean - by comparison, the old column stands vertically, as solid as a rock (well many, given that this is how concrete is made).
The old column's door wasn't secure, and so I popped it off to see into the base. The fuse carrier was missing from the BILL cut-out (I assume that the electricity supply was transferred to the new column, but didn't fancy performing a touch test to confirm this). With the lantern having its own control gear, the only other component in the base was the P42 relay and base, as well as numerous snails!
This view allows for an interesting comparison between new and old to be made.
