194AI. Church Lane, Lyme Green, Sutton, Sutton Lane Ends, Cheshire With thanks to Dwight for informing me of this Survivor. Located in the shadow of the eponymous St James' Church, and positioned opposite the church hall, is a 15 ft (5 m) 'Avenue 2D' column and top-entry 'Banstead' bracket, both of which were made by Concrete Utilities. The structure now supports a Thorn Beta 5 lantern, although this lantern will not be original, particularly as it features a plastic bowl toggle, which was a change made to the earlier stainless steel toggle arrangement in the 1980s.
The column is positioned with its base positioned within a hedge. Fortunately, as the foliage is kept trimmed, access to the base compartment wouldn't require having to use a pair of electrical side cutters as makeshift secateurs to clear a way through (the voice of experience talking there).
Unusually for a top-entry Beta 5, the lantern is positioned with the bowl toggle facing forwards. Ordinarily, as the NEMA photocell is installed at the other end of the lantern on these models (instead of being positioned in the centre of the canopy, as on the side-entry model), the lantern must be positioned 'backwards' to avoid the photocell from fouling the bracket. As this lantern doesn't appear to have a photocell, or even the usual turret in the canopy casting to switch the NEMA socket would be installed, it can be installed the other way around.
A ridiculously undersized LED 'corn' lamp is now installed within the lantern, replacing the 35 Watt SOX (low pressure sodium) lamp for which the Beta 5 was designed.
