194G. Ford Close / Salacre Lane, Birkenhead, Merseyside With thanks to Dwight for informing me of these Survivors. Installed on both of these roads are 25 ft (8 m) concrete columns made by Concrete Utilities, both running 90 Watt SOX (low pressure sodium) lanterns - on Ford Close, this is a 1950s' Avenue 3DNN with an Arc 2 side-entry bracket and later Philips MA 90 lantern, which seems rather overkill for a short cul-de-sac leading only to some garages. By comparison, the Salacre Lane installation comprises a Highway 'X' column with Highway bracket and ELECO GR 100 lantern, and as this is a busier through road, this setup seems more appropriate here.
The Ford Lane column is pictured first. A second column was at the end of the access road to the garages, and seemed to support another 90 Watt lantern, although I was unable to determine its identity from historical Google Street View imagery (the lantern has been replaced subsequently).
Whilst the oblong hole in the bracket is intentional, the crack following the bracket curve towards the lantern end is not!
The Salacre Lane installation has definitely seen better days!
Lengths of insulation tape have been used to try to hold the bracket together, while the GR 100 looks to have had several air rifle pellets shot at it during the course of its life.
The detector from a two-part photocell also appears to be hanging out of the lantern.
