197D. Booth Way, Elton, Tottington, Bury, Greater Manchester With thanks to Dwight for informing me of these Survivors. Installed throughout this estate are a considerable number of 15 ft (5 m) Concrete Utilities' Estate Minor X columns and short outreach 15 degree side-entry brackets. Many of the lanterns are GEC products intended for running 35 Watt SOX (low pressure sodium) lamps, although they are now converted to run LED retro-fit lamps instead. The majority of these lanterns are the Z9480 design (the side-entry variant of the Z9481), suggesting that these are the original lanterns from when the estate was built, and the other lanterns are later replacements.

The first column to be seen when accessing Booth Way from Booth Street supports this Z9536.

The combination of aluminium canopy and polycarbonate bowl suggests that this is a mid-1970s' version, produced just before GEC changed to GRP canopies.

Although capable of accommodating a 55 Watt lamp, the LED equivalent of a 35 Watt lamp is fitted.

Around the corner, the smaller version of the Z9536, the Z9532, was fitted to this column.

This too features an aluminium canopy and polycarbonate bowl.

Remarkably, one Z9480 (actually, a Z9490, as the lamp control gear is housed within the lantern) managed to escape being converted to LED.

The 35 Watt SOX lamp is very worn, however, and may not work any longer.

If the lamp is still working, the lantern must look peculiar in amongst the white light of the LED lamps.

At least, the daytime appearance of the lanterns is uniform.

Sadly, this example's bowl is damaged.

Fortunately, one of the holes is towards the back of the lantern, allowing any dirt or moisture that has managed to enter to escape easily.

This ELECO GR 550 (the side-entry version of the GR 553) is another replacement.

This is another lantern that can run a 55 Watt lamp, but again, the shorter lamp is used.
