197Q. Carrington Road, Portwood, Stockport, Greater Manchester Installed within the car park for a business premises that is to be found close to the M60 interchange are two 25 ft (8 m) tubular steel columns, with both supporting the original version of the Atlas Alpha 3 lantern for 250 - 400 Watt MBF (mercury vapour) lamps. Unlike later versions of the Alpha 3, the bowls are attached to the canopies on these examples, with the whole assembly sliding forward to gain access to the lantern's innards. These examples are likely to date back to the late 1950s or early 1960s, but look to have been superseded in around the 1980s, as floodlights are attached to the column shafts at a lower height.

The bracket on the foreground column seems slightly insecure, and is leaning forwards a fraction.

The frost-covered canopy and rear casting indicates that this lantern is not in regular nightly service any longer, as expected.

The Mk 1 Alpha 3 is easily identified, thanks to the fixing toggles being positioned on the sides of the rear casting.

Moisture drips are visible on the inside of the second example's bowl.
