211A. Reeve Close, Scole, Diss, Norfolk With thanks to Dwight for informing me of these Survivors. Installed at the back of Reeve Close are two 15 ft (5 m) ELECO 'Silverline' aluminium columns, with one being an HW-1226-3 type, and supporting a GR 5011 lantern; the other, an HW-1226-7, and supporting an HW-918.
The column supporting the GR 5011 is pictured first.
The only difference between this and the sister GR 501 lantern is that the lampholder is at the front of the lantern on the GR 5011, whilst on the GR 501, it is situated at the back. Although the lantern is long enough to accommodate a 55 Watt SOX (low pressure sodium) lamp, this example is fitted with a shorter 35 Watt lamp instead.
The HW-918 suits the appearance of the HW-1226-7 style of column, thanks to the latter's slightly curved bracket.
The catch supporting the Perspex bowl is not secured correctly, resulting in dirt and water gathering in the base of the bowl.
Slight crazing exists on the bowl's surface - the result of UV degradation produced by a combination of sunlight and the 80 Watt MBF (mercury vapour) lamp contained within the lantern.
A feature that has arisen with Silverline columns as they have aged is the noticeably darker aluminium immediately above ground level - the result of a reaction between the metal and moisture in the surrounding ground. In especially acidic ground conditions, this can corrode the aluminium, requiring complete replacement of the column.
