211B. St Leonard's Close, Scole, Diss, Norfolk With thanks to Dwight for informing me of these Survivors. Installed on this road, and on the adjoining St Andrew's Road, are a number of tubular steel columns that are to an unusual design, with most still retaining their (probably original) CU Phosco P178 post-top lanterns into 2024. The lamps fitted within the lanterns these days are unknown, but in all likelihood, when new, each would have run a single 80 Watt MBF (mercury vapour) lamp.
The columns are unusual in that the base compartment is of the same diameter as the rest of the column shaft, making the shafts wider than the usual 76 mm (3 inch) diameter used for 5 m columns.
Only the top section of the column reduces in diameter to be able to accommodate the lantern. Despite the reduction, the lantern appears to be held to the column using insulation tape.
More tape is applied to the top of the column's inspection door - presumably, the lock has failed, requiring the door to be secured by another means.
A nearby column is now fitted with a P107 lantern (another CU Phosco product) - this is likely to have replaced a P178 that had developed a fault. Again, the column door is taped in place.
The plastic refractor cylinder surrounding the lamp has discoloured from a combination of heat and UV degradation.
