213A. Chelmick Drive, Church Stretton, Shropshire With thanks to Dwight for informing me of these Survivors. Fitted to several Stanton 10F 15 ft (5 m) concrete columns along this cul-de-sac are top-entry Thorn Beta 5 35 Watt SOX lanterns, with two of these being possibly older, and supporting the original style of bowl, which required a separate support ring.
With this style, the Beta 5s are probably from the late 1960s, or early 1970s.
A SELC / Westire photocell with a dark green casing switches the lantern as necessary; this is probably on a 20 mm diameter conduit thread, rather than a NEMA socket, as photocells were not in common use when this version of the Beta 5 was made. Notice the heat damage to the underside of the bowl...
The close-up, underside view reveals the reason for the bowl damage - the SOX lamp and any associated integral control gear has been replaced in-house with a 70 Watt elliptical high pressure sodium (SON-E) lamp with an internal ignitor. This has become too hot for the bowl plastic to tolerate, causing an elliptical hole to form in it, as well as to warp it slightly on the sides.
The second installation was to be found a little further down the hill.
The bowl remained intact on this example - it may have escaped the conversion that befell its neighbour.
