217D. Whittle Parkway, Cippenham, Slough, Berkshire With thanks to Dwight for informing me of these Survivors. Located near the junction of Bath Road are two 15 ft (5 m) Stanton 10 concrete columns with 'F'-type side-entry brackets, and GEC Z8596 lanterns. The Z8596 is the forerunner of the Z8896 lantern, and is similar in appearance; the main differences including the older lantern having a rounder canopy, and a glass prismatic refractor bowl supported in an aluminium surround ring. Both lanterns were designed for running 80 - 125 Watt MBF (mercury vapour) lamps, however, and all in likelihood, the lanterns seen here may be equipped to run 80 Watt lamps, even if they may not be in operation any longer.
The Z8596s overlook a surprisingly parked-up side street; however, most of these vehicles must belong to a car sales dealership to the right.
The column shows signs of advanced spalling at the top of its shaft.
A small amount of dirt is present on the bottom of the bowl.
Unusually for their time, the columns are positioned with their inspection doors facing away from oncoming traffic - a trait now used commonly to allow anyone working on the base to observe the behaviour of any approaching vehicles. This is the second column.
This column also looked to be in poor condition at the top. The bracket here is cracked too.
Neither lantern has any type of photocell fitted, suggesting that they could be switched using time switches installed in the bases, or from a separate location entirely.
