217CA. Off Bennet Road, Whitley, Reading, Berkshire With thanks to Dwight for informing me of this Survivor. Installed at the entrance to a premises owned by BT is a 25 ft (8 m) Highway-X concrete column with a single arm, side-entry Highway bracket - both of which were made by Concrete Utilities - and supporting a P157 lantern made by CU's lantern division, Phosware - the earlier name for CU Phosco. The P157 could accommodate 85 - 140 Watt SO/H and SOI/H lamps (the forerunners of the later 55 - 90 Watt SOX low-pressure sodium lamps).
The installation appears to be a one-off, with the rest of the yard's lighting provided by floodlights attached to high masts.
The concrete is in good condition, with no signs of spalling being present at the bracket's joint with the column.
A deep Perspex bowl (which has become translucent with age) is employed on the lantern; the depth being a necessity, owing to the sizeable 1960s' lamp control gear components being housed within the lantern. Two 'Oddie' keys are employed to secure the bowl to the canopy under normal circumstances.
