218. North Cottages / The Drive, Napsbury, St Albans, Hertfordshire Installed on an access road to the rear of the properties are several GEC lanterns, with most attached to 15 ft (5 m) concrete columns produced by GEC too.
This leaning column, complete with Z9481 35 Watt SOX lantern, is to be found on the section of road that changes from North Cottages to The Drive.
As the close-up of the lantern appears to show a reflector plate above the lamp, the control gear may be installed within it, which would then make the lanterns Z9491s.
Google Street View imagery reveals that the column has been leaning since 2009 (at least), although this appears to have worsened over the years.
Although not clear here, the lamp fitted looked very worn, and probably did not work any longer. The amount of dirt in the bowl can be attributed to a small piece of the front of it having been broken.
Further up the lane, an identical (but more vertical) installation could be seen.
A small amount of spalling existed at the base of the bracket, at its joint with the column.
The lantern here was in better overall condition.
One final concrete column existed a short distance away.
The lantern here was misaligned on its bracket, and also supported a grubby bowl.
The last installation was newer, and comprised a 5 m tubular steel column and Z5670 lantern.
The Midland Main Line railway passes alongside this road, and it was from seeing this lantern from the window of a train that I decided to find the road, and pay a visit - I'm glad that I did!
Through the discoloured bowl, an unknown lamp is seen surrounded by a glass refractor dome.
