219. Maryport Road, Siddick, Workington, Cumbria With thanks to Claire Pendrous for (indirectly) informing me of these Survivors through this image, and it subsequent caption, on her Flickr account. Installed within the site boundary of the now-demolished Eastman Chemical factory are three Cohen 25 ft (8 m) tubular steel columns, each supporting a GEC Z8430CM lantern for 250 Watt MBF (mercury vapour) lamps. Prior to the demolition of the buildings, a number of other, identical installations existed on the site's internal roadways; however, only these three remain. As they face away from the site, and into the road outside, there may have been an assumption that they were required to light this section of carriageway, though as their original switching point no longer exists, they are unlikely to work any longer.

Being right on the northwest coast of England, the wind exposure here is considerable (hence, the presence of several wind turbines). Given that Cohen columns are now known to have structural defects that have caused examples to fall over without warning, the fact that these are still upright is rather surprising.

The foreground Z8430CM looks to have a slight water ingress issue, judging by the green patch in the bottom of the bowl. The fact that the bowl clip has had to be held closed with a length of insulation tape may have caused the fault.

Another defective part of these columns is the column spigot - moisture can become trapped on the inside of the bracket at the point where it attaches to the column, rotting away the steel from the inside. Judging by the rough edge below the two sets of grub screws on the bracket, this may be occurring here.

The door was missing from the third column; however, as it was facing away from the road, I was unable to see if any lamp control gear remained in the base.

The hinge pin at the front of this lantern had slid out of its fixing, but thankfully, the bowl was still supported on one of the two lugs.
