219F. Craw Hall / Longtown Road, Brampton, Cumberland, Cumbria With thanks to Dwight for informing me of these Survivors. Installed on these two roads are examples of concrete lighting columns produced by the Springbank Quarry Company Limited, of Airdrie, in Perthshire. Both are 15 ft (5 m) in height, and are to the company's 'F' design. The two columns both support a top-entry Thorn Beta 5 lantern, which, although intended for running a 35 Watt SOX (low pressure sodium) lamp, today run LED retro-fit lamps instead.
The installations are similar in appearance to the Avenue 2D column, and Arc 2 bracket, made by Concrete Utilities, but are slightly thinner overall. This is the Craw Hall example.
The angle of the bracket's top-entry connector causes the lantern to tilt downwards slightly.
Part of the rear casing for the LED lamp appears to have discoloured in the sunlight.
A single, identical installation survives on Longtown Road.
Unlike the equivalent products from Concrete Utilities, where the bracket and column blend together cleanly, the Springbank setup features an indentation in the concrete between the two.
Both this Beta 5, and the one on Craw Hall, are switched using a miniature photocell that is positioned in the dedicated place on the canopy that accommodates the NEMA socket for regular photocell control.
The door lock (a square coach bolt) has failed on this example, requiring the door to be banded in place.
