219E. Belah Crescent / The Nook, Whiteclosegate, Knowefield, Carlisle, Cumberland, Cumbria With thanks to Dwight for informing me of these Survivors. Installed on this small estate are three 15 ft (5 m) GEC concrete columns, all of which now support top-entry Thorn Beta 5 lanterns, which were designed to run 35 Watt SOX (low pressure sodium) lamps, but are now converted to run LED retro-fit lamps instead.
This is the first of the two columns on Belah Crescent.
The rather angular bracket is a distinctive feature of this type of installation.
The two-part photocell detector fitted to the Beta 5 appears to be a Horstmann T24 type.
The second is just past The Nook.
Anti-bird spikes have been added (presumably, unofficially) to the top section of the bracket. Here, the photocell detector is a Royce Thompson P42 type.
The lantern attached to the single column on The Nook was dayburning when pictured in July 2024.
The dayburning allowed the LED lamp's distribution to be showcased - as can be seen, only a very small portion of the bowl is illuminated, which must look atrocious after nightfall, particularly when the underside of the bowl requires cleaning.
Of greater concern is this vertical crack in the concrete to the side of the door aperture.
