222. Haslemere Railway Station, Lower Street, Haslemere, Surrey Installed on a grass bank between Lower Street and the station frontage is a 25 ft (8 m) 'Avenue 3DNN' concrete column supporting a short outreach 'Highway' bracket, both made by Concrete Utilities. Attached to the bracket is a top-entry Revo C13723 lantern, known affectionately in collecting circles as a 'Dalek', owing to the dimply ends to the bowl resembling the fronts of the Doctor Who villains. These lanterns were designed to run a 140 Watt SO/H / SOI/H lamp, and a 90 Watt SOX (low pressure sodium) lamp in later years. As newer heritage-style lighting exists in front of the station building, this installation may be redundant, but has remained in place nevertheless.
Although only this example survives, at least one other may have existed in earlier times.
The installation will date from the 1960s.
A fibreglass cow, decorated with a rural scene, stands guard near to the column - this was added in 2019, following the Haslemere Festival that year.
As the bracket is intended to face the same direction as the column door does, when installed backwards, the triangular profiles of both column and bracket do not line up.
The Perspex bowl has become translucent with age, but is in otherwise good (if not slightly grubby) condition.
The concrete composition differs slightly between the column and bracket too.
