222A. Off Bloggs Way, Cranleigh, Waverley, Surrey With thanks to Louis Cunningham for informing me of these Survivors. Located just inside the compound of a telephone exchange is a 15 ft (5 m) Thorn 'Sheerline' hexagonal aluminium column fitted with a Type 5 side-entry bracket, and supporting a Beta 8 lantern, for a 55 Watt SOX (low pressure sodium) lamp. No further examples appear to exist within the compound, and this sole example seems to exist to provide illumination over the entry gates, rather than the yard generally. The adjacent Royal Mail Delivery Office and Post Office also has some Survivors installed within its grounds, with one of these being a further Thorn aluminium column, but to the triangular 'Leader' design, with a Type 2 top-entry bracket, and Beta 4 lantern, for 60 - 200 Watt GLS (incandescent) and 80 - 125 Watt MBF (mercury vapour) lamps. The remainder of the lighting comprises lanterns from the GEC Z5713 post-top range, fitted to 5 m tubular aluminium columns of uncertain manufacturer.
The Beta 8 is pictured first - with British Telecom having historically been part of the General Post Office, historically, the fact that the telephone exchange is situated alongside the Delivery Office may not be coincidental.
The lantern features a polycarbonate refractor bowl - this was an official option, but tended to be specified as an anti-vandal option to the usual acrylic bowl. The bowl has discoloured heavily from UV degradation in sunlight over the years.
The lamp is still just about visible through the bowl's underside. The plastic appears to have warped slightly along the facing side section.
The other lights are positioned on (or alongside) a closed-off footpath that passes to the right of the Post Office building - the three columns supporting Z5713s are likely to be later additions.
These bowls have also discoloured, though nothing like as severely as the Beta 8's has.
The Beta 4 features an unusual ribbed bowl design (which would make a tremendous jelly mould!). As this lantern was launched as AEI's 'Kirby', along with the 'Leader' column, there is a possibility that this could be an early example.
The other two Z5713s feature quite differing amounts of remaining paint on their respective canopies.
