222E. Orchard Road, Shalford, Guildford, Surrey With thanks to Louis Cunningham for informing me of these Survivors. Installed on this somewhat under-lit residential road between the A281 The Street and Tillingbourne Road are two 15 ft (5 m) tubular steel columns made by Stewarts & Lloyds, with swan neck brackets; both of which still (in April 2025) support GEC Z8591 lanterns, designed for running 80 - 125 Watt MBF (mercury vapour) lamps, and both could well still run the former, just as they would have done when new in the 1960s.
Both columns are painted Surrey's standard light green finish. The first employs two square bolts positioned vertically on the door to secure it ordinarily. A weather bar is also installed on the column structure above the door.
The top paint coat is flaking on the swan neck, revealing an earlier, darker green finish beneath.
Sadly, the prismatic glass refractor bowl is cracked along its front side. A Royce Thompson P42 two-part photocell detector is installed on the canopy.
The second column is located on a slight bend in the road. At the time of photographing, it was looking a little sorry for itself. The slight lean to the column suggests that it must have been struck at low speed by a vehicle. There was also a small amount of glass in the surrounding area, but this was probably from the vehicle, rather than from the lantern.
The lantern itself was hanging by its wires, and the ER4N detector had detached from its position on the canopy.
There is also damage to the bowl, although I think that this is unrelated to the collision, and may have been caused by some toe-rag wielding a catapult or similar in the past.
This version of the column uses a single slot lock in the base of the door.
The unusual view of the canopy allowed the normally-obscured GEC logo to be seen with ease.
Naturally, I reported the hanging lantern to Surrey County Council as an emergency - hopefully, it was able to be reattached without issue (I did leave my details with the rather bemused call handler to ask whether it might be saved for me if not, however - always the opportunist)!
