228. Main Street, Chideock, Bridport, Dorset With thanks to Louis Cunningham for informing me of this Survivor. Attached to the top of a wooden pole by means of a short bracket is a Phosware (CU Phosco) P157 lantern for 85 - 140 Watt SO/H / SOI/H lamps (the earlier equivalent of the 55 - 90 Watt SOX (low pressure sodium)) lamps. I suspect that the lantern has survived because of its proximity to numerous overhead cables - some of which will be running at mains potential, possibly, without any insulation to protect against shock in the event of accidental contact - making replacement challenging. Even regular maintenance would be difficult, although clearly, this must have occurred many times in the past. Perhaps, additional telecommunications cables have been added over the years, which has made gaining access tricky in more recent times.

The veritable Cat's Cradle of wires beneath the lantern demonstrates the awkwardness that any engineer attempting to work on this installation would have in trying to reach it. Notice that the newer WRTL Arc in the background, on a replacement bracket, is positioned at a height lower than the cabling.

At some point, a NEMA photocell socket has been added to the lantern's canopy; the socket is seen here fitted with a SELC / Westire unit.

Even when viewed from the other side of the road, access to the lantern is still not straightforward.

The P157's bowl features a distinctive ribbed front and back end.
