46I. London Road, Whimple, East Devon, Devon With thanks to Louis Cunningham for informing me of this Survivor. Located within the grounds of a Telephone Exchange is a 10 ft (3 m) Concrete Utilities' Byway column with 15 degree short outreach bracket and a CU (Phosware) P141 lantern, designed for running two 2 ft (600 mm) T12 fluorescent lamps of either 20 or 40 Watt. This is the only light of its kind within the exchange compound, and would serve to light the roadway into the site, as well as (to a lesser extent) the small car park at the front, for use by staff working within the building at night.
The column is close to the site entrance, and is plainly visible from London Road.
Sadly, a small break exists in the lantern's Perspex bowl, though as this plastic is especially thin in Phosware lanterns, making it very fragile, this is not surprising, considering that the lantern would have been around (and probably over) 60 years old when photographed in June 2024.
The damage has allowed a small amount of dirt to gather on the inside of the bowl. The so-called 'Oddie Key', used in securing the bowl frame to the lantern body, looks to be missing, and possibly replaced with a screw or bolt.
I wonder if the lantern has ever seen much use.
The fluorescent lamps still remain within the lantern, although the whole internal assembly appears to have collapsed.
Probably intentionally, the shape of the bracket matches the profile of the entry point at the back of the lantern.
