33AC. Off Bagnall, Cinderhill, Bulwell, Nottingham With thanks to Leo Conway for discovering this Survivor. Located at the far end of a garden belonging to a property on the neighbouring Sycamore Rise is a 10 ft (3·048 m) Revo 'Moseley' cast iron column supporting a side-entry swan neck bracket and GEC Z9480, from the 'Clearside' range. Although this could be assumed to have been installed by a homeowner of the property as a novelty garden light, historical mapping suggests that the column is positioned at the start of a lane that led to the former Bagnall House, which last saw use as an ambulance station for the National Coal Board (NCB), but was derelict by 1976. Therefore, the installation may well pre-date the houses on Sycamore Rise (which appear to date from the late 1970s / early 1980s), with the lantern having not been lit since then.
The column is plainly visible above the boundary fence for the garden.
Remarkably, not only is the bowl intact (with only a couple of cracks), but a 35 Watt SOX (low pressure sodium) lamp remains in place within the lantern. I would love to know how old it is, as I would to see inside the column base, and discover if any lamp control gear components remain within it.
The underside of the bowl shows signs of dirt ingress, but all things considered, this is minimal if the lantern has been disused for over 40 years.
This front view shows how the column fits into a convenient wedge between this garden, and that of the neighbouring (older) property.
Oddly, the swan neck is painted red, while the remainder of the paint on the column looks to be green.
Unlike the top-entry version, the Z9481, which has the lampholder positioned at the 'rear' of the lantern (not that the orientation is critical), it is positioned at the front on the side-entry version.
Only this front portion of the bowl shows evidence of damage.
