69CAA. St Paul's Road, West Smethwick, Sandwell, West Midlands With thanks to Leo Conway for discovering this Survivor. Standing alongside its modern tubular steel replacement is a Stanton 30 ft (10 m) concrete column with an F-type bracket and locally-made Relite Hyperion 'C' lantern, for 135 Watt SOX (low pressure sodium) lamps. The new column was in place and its lantern operational by May 2024, according to Google Street View, and yet, the old column and lantern remains in place, disconnected and no longer serving any purpose, into 2025 - these images were captured in January.

One possible explanation for the old column to have remained in place is the difficulty in gaining access to it, owing to parked vehicles on the roadway alongside. There might have been a delay in transferring the electricity service to the new column, preventing the old column from being removed at the same time as its replacement was installed.

The new and old lanterns are at roughly the same height. The decision to replace the concrete column may have been because of the small amount of cracking that is present around the bracket's connection with the column.

The close-up of the Hyperion reveals that its bowl is installed the wrong way around. There are also two two-part photocell detectors on the canopy, with the more prominent Royce Thompson P42 detector using the purpose-made aperture in the canopy, while a newer detector can be seen to the left.

The column's backboard, which would have supported the electricity service cut-out, photocell relay and lamp control gear, has been removed. Only the cables for the lamp and two-part detector remain visible.

Another view of the installations, from the other side of the road.

The spalling bracket joint appears worse from this angle.
