97GA. Scotch Orchard, Lichfield, Staffordshire With thanks to Dwight for informing me of these Survivors. Installed on two almost-consecutive 5 m tubular steel columns are lanterns from the GEC Z5713 range - one being the type with an 11 inch (279·4 mm) high bowl; the other being the type with a 16 inch (406·4 mm) bowl, and known as the Z5718. Confusingly, the former type was also known as the ZD1171A in earlier catalogues, while the latter was known as the Z5730. Both run 35 Watt SOX (or possibly 26 Watt SOX-E) lamps here, despite the longer bowl version also being able to accommodate 55 Watt lamps as an alternative.
The shorter of the two lanterns is pictured first.
The base casting style suggests that this is a later version of Z5713. The canopy's original matte black paint finish has faded and worn over the years. Surprisingly, the bowl has not yellowed to the extent that some of this type of bowl do.
The second column is also painted the traditional light green colour of Lichfield's older lighting stock.
The SOX lamp's outer oxide coating makes it slightly reflective in strong sunlight.
