97KK. Off Walsall Road, Bridgtown, Cannock With thanks to AgentHalogen_87 for informing me of these Survivors. Built into the low front wall for a tyre centre are five tubular steel poles, with three of these supporting Thorn Gamma 3 post-top lanterns - originally, all five posts would have looked the same, but two lanterns are now missing, with the most recent disappearance having occurred at some point after November 2012, but before June 2015, according to Google Street View imagery. At the time that this lantern was removed, it was probably not working, as I suspect that the remainder may not be now, as newer floodlights are attached to the posts too, which are likely to have superseded the older lanterns.
The three surviving Gamma 3s are seen in this view - notice the Thorn Sunflood halogen floodlight attached to the foreground column; unlike the later discharge floodlights, this could be of similar age to the Gamma 3s.
The base castings were painted blue when the posts were painted the same - previously, the metalwork was painted cream, hints of which can be seen through where the blue has flaked away.
One of the missing lanterns is seen in the middle here - only the base casting remains. This post has tyres wrapped around it - these would not have fitted while the lantern was still in place.
Although the Gamma 3 would, typically, run a 250 - 400 Watt MBF (mercury vapour) or SON (high pressure sodium) lamp, these examples might have employed high wattage GLS (incandescent tungsten filament) lamps instead, as there is nowhere to house the external lamp control gear, owing to the posts being built in to the wall.
