Off How Lane, Castleton, High Peak Situated in a car park area for an adjacent industrial premises are two 15 ft (5 m) Thorn 'Leader' triangular sheet aluminium columns, both of which support examples of the company's Gamma 3 post-top lantern, for a single 250 - 400 Watt MBF (mercury vapour) or SON (high pressure sodium) lamp. One of the two lanterns is missing its canopy, suggesting that it probably doesn't work any longer, but the other example is intact, and could still be operational.
The more intact of the two lanterns is attached to the column that is located at the back of the car park, and is in line with the access gates, making it visible on Google Street View (hence, how I found it). The second column is not visible on Google, and so was a pleasant surprise when I paid a visit.
Adaptors are fitted to the columns to allow the circular lantern spigot entries to fit the triangular column spigots.
The second column, with the damaged lantern fitted, is situated by the gates, but because of surrounding foliage, is difficult to spot from the road.
I know from my own Gamma 3 that the canopy clips have a habit of springing open, especially when the lantern has been operating for a while, so the combination of this and the then-loosened canopy being struck by surrounding tree branches could be what caused the canopy to detach completely. Judging by the amount of debris that has gathered in the bowl, the canopy has been missing for some time.
