Off Perseverance Road, Spur Retail Park, Widemarsh, Hereford With thanks to LeoLampposts for informing me of these Survivors. Installed in a car park for several industrial premises are several 1980s' 10 m Abacus base-hinged columns, including one double-armed example; all of which support Thorn Alpha 3 lanterns with the lamp control gear housed within the lantern itself. The lanterns will all run 250 - 400 Watt MBF (mercury vapour) or SON (high pressure sodium) lamps. Part of the complex serves as a local depot for Cadent Gas; however, in the past, the whole area was used as a gasworks, so the columns may date from the days when the depot was considerably larger than it is now.

This is the furthest east of the three columns. The use of base-hinged columns is surprising when all columns would be accessible using a MEWP (Mobile Elevated Work Platform).

The bowl has detached on this side, leaving a gap for rainwater and detritus to gather within it. The underside of the bowl is also cracked.

The second column faces towards the previous one. Interestingly, both columns are installed in such a way that they would hinge down in the same direction.

This example's bowl is also slightly ajar. A couple of star cracks are visible in its surface.

The double-armed example would be slightly difficult to maintain in its lowered position, as the right-hand lantern (as seen here) would rub along the ground.

Anti-bird spikes are installed on both the bracket and the two lanterns.

The spikes appear to be doing their job, judging by the much cleaner canopy on the left-hand lantern, in comparison to those of the lanterns seen above.

The right-hand bowl shows evidence of impact damage, and it has detached from its hinged portion - perhaps, this was caused during lowering of the column, as per my above speculation.
