Ocean Drive, The Shore, North Leith, Edinburgh Attached to a building that served formerly as the Harbour and Dock Offices is a wall bracket that has been rather crudely modified to accommodate a GEC Z9454 90 Watt SOX (low pressure sodium) lamp. Despite the building appearing to have been converted for other uses in the modern era, the old light survives, although it is unlikely to remain in operation now.
The bracket is installed at a relatively low mounting height, despite the wall continuing for a distance above it. What appears to be a witness mark for the position of a former cable that, presumably, fed the lantern, is still visible on the wall alongside. This all but confirms that the installation has become disused and abandoned. As this lantern does not look to feature its own lamp control gear, this would have had to have been installed separately.
The bracket may have supported a top-entry lantern many years ago, before being fitted with a section of right-angled pipe to accommodate the side-entry lantern. As the original bracket does not contain any pipework of its own, the supply cable must have had to be clipped to the top bar section when the light was still in use.
A lamp remains installed within the lantern - this is possibly a 'proper' (i.e. not made by Philips under licence) OSRAM lamp, which would date it to no later than 2000 - this being the year that the company stopped producing their own SOX lamps.
A further time capsule exists in the form of the photocell fitted - this is a 1980s' Royce Thompson P5, and is likely to be original to when the lantern was installed.
