College Way, Merchant City, Glasgow Located near the junction of Cathedral Street is a 5 m conical aluminium column supporting a Thorn Gamma 6 post-top lantern. This combination seems somewhat incongruous, with the Gamma Basique replacing the Gamma 6 in Thorn's product line-up in around 2002, and the aluminium column likely to be slightly newer than this. Therefore, this could be a very late production Gamma 6, an old stock example that was drafted into service, or also a re-used lantern from a previous lighting installation that existed at the same point. Following the demolition of the former Glasgow Metropolitan College building during 2017, the land was given over to recreational use, becoming the Allan Glen Gardens, with College Way receiving new lighting at the time. Therefore, this installation may have become redundant and abandoned through the redevelopment work.
The installation is first seen from a slightly uphill vantage point, looking towards Cathedral Street.
Looking back up at the column, the lantern can be seen to be leaning slightly.
As is typical with these later Gamma 6s, virtually all of the paint has worn away from the shallow canopy, exposing the aluminium beneath.
