Newport Road, Castlefields, Stafford With thanks to both AgentHalogen_87 and Leo Conway for informing me of this Survivor. Located opposite Castle House Drive is a 1960s' 25 ft (8 m) Cohen Brothers' tubular steel column supporting an ELECO GR 150, named after the 150 Watt SOX (low pressure sodium) lamp that this lantern was intended to run, although this wattage evolved into the later 135 Watt lamp after only a few years of the lantern being in production. With Staffordshire favouring the SOX-E 'Economy' lamp, this example will run a 91 Watt type - and entered 2026 doing just that, despite the installation being around 60 years old by then.
Despite the column's age, the paint finish looks fresh, making the installation appear far newer than it actually is.
A short, cranked bracket links the column to the lantern.
Aside from some minor cracks to the bowl, the lantern is in good condition.
The bowl fits into an aluminium support ring that then clips to the canopy. Later versions saw the support ring removed, with the bowl attaching directly to the canopy.
