Gaolgate Street, Castletown, Stafford With thanks to both AgentHalogen_87 and Leo Conway for informing me of this Survivor. Positioned near to the junction of Gaol Street / Queensway, within the pedestrian precinct, is a 10 m tubular steel column that still (in early 2026) supported its original GEC Z8536 lantern from the mid-1980s. Previously, additional examples were to be found along Gaolgate Street, although this is now the only one remaining. The lantern could run a 250 or 400 Watt MBF (mercury vapour) or SON (high pressure sodium) lamp, with the required control gear being housed within the lantern itself.

Stafford seems to have favoured the GEC 'Turtle' design for many years, with this 1970s' image showing Gaolgate Street lit with Z8526s. Although the Z8536 dated back to the 1960s, it was not used commonly at the time - perhaps, the cost proved prohibitive originally, when compared to lanterns with the control gear supplied separately.

A shallow dent is visible on this side of the aluminium canopy.
